To honor and protect the sacrifices of our nation's heroes, we have protected this award against Stolen Valor. To purchase this ribbon for yourself or a family member's shadow box, or display case, we require a DD-214 or other valid proof that this medal was honorably awarded.
The act or acts of heroism must be so notable and have involved risk of life so extraordinary as to set the individual apart from his comrades. The ribbon had been initially proposed for award to qualifying members of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I but was authorized permanently by Congress in the Appropriations Act of 1918.
