Richard Arvine Overton, a man believed to be the United States’ oldest living war veteran celebrated his 107th Memorial Day last Monday. It is amazing to see a man who has witnessed the changing of the times firsthand. He is an eyewitness of the Great Depression, World War Two, the moon landing, the Vietnam War, the incredible rises in technology, the change of the millennium, and so many other world shaping events.
Despite his age Overton still does all of his own yard work. He enjoys working and caring for horses. He also mentioned that he never watches television. When asked about his good health Overton stated that he has taken an aspirin every day and smokes around twelve cigars. He also enjoys a bit of whisky in coffee in the mornings and sometimes at night. It is incredible to see such a sound mind in a man who has lived over a century.
Overton stated that because of his age he has become a bit of an interest. This isn’t the first time a man of Overton’s position has been nationally recognized. Like many other World War Two veterans, Overton has been thanked for his service to America. It is a shame that many veterans go unrecognized for their sacrifices. But thankfully the United States is still a country that is proud of their soldiers.
