We received word of the authorization of a new NATO military medal and ribbon. Below is the information we received.
Subject: NATO medal for Africa Ops
Attached USD (P&R) memo provides authorization for Acceptance and Wear of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal for NATO Operations and Activities in Relation to Africa. I’ve also attached the latest list of NATO medals authorized for acceptance and wear by U.S. Service members.
This is NOT for operations in relation to Libya, there is a separate NATO medal for operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR, which is being staffed through a separate action.

MEMORANDUM FOR SECRETARIES OF THE MILITARY DEPARTMENTS
CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF
SUBJECT: Acceptance and wear of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medals for North Atlantic Treaty Organization Operations and Activities in Relation to Africa.
In accordance with title 5, United States Code, 7342, Executive Order 11446, and Department of Defense Manual (DoDM) 1348.33-V3, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal of NATO operations and activities in relation to Africa in authorized for acceptance and wear by U.S. Service members and DoD civilian personnel who have been determined eligible for consideration in accordance with award criteria issued by NATO.
Refer to DoDM 1348.33-V3 for additional acceptance and wear guidance for U.S. Service members. The list of NATO medals authorized for acceptance and wear by eligible U.S. Service members referenced in DoDM 1348.33-V3 will be updated, accordingly.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Civilian Personnel Policy may issue such instructions as necessary concerning the acceptance of the above-referenced medal.
