Originally authorized as the Space Badge in 1982 and in 1993 was renamed the Space and Missile Badge. It was intended to replace the missile badge which was prohibited for wear after October 1998; this prohibition never went into effect since the regulation was rescinded in 1995.
The space/missile badge is awarded to officers in the astronaut and space and missile operations career field and to enlisted personnel in the space systems career field.
Individuals must have performed in a space duty position in a space unit for 12 months to receive the basic space badge. Missileers receive the badge after graduating from the Undergraduate Space and Missile Training at Vandenberg AFB, California and are currently authorized to wear both this badge and the appropriate missile badge "pocket rocket".
