Authorized in 1987, the basic badge was awarded to officers who possess a fully qualified AFSC and one year of experience in the career field and to enlisted personnel who held a 5-level AFSC in the weather career area.
To obtain the senior badge, officers had to have seven years' experience and a fully qualified AFSC while enlisted personnel needed a 7-level AFSC.
The master badge required officers to hold a staff-level position and to have 12 years of experience while enlisted personnel were required to hold a 9-level AFSC.
In 1993 along with all other specialty badges, the criteria for award of the senior and master badges was changed to three and seven years, respectively. The badge design was retained but was made with the newer bright finish.
