Instituted: 1944 Criteria: Awarded to Navy/Marine Corps units for outstanding heroism in action or extremely meritorious service Devices: Bronze, Silver Star The Navy Unit Commendation was established by the Secretary of the Navy on December 18, 1944. The Commendation is awarded by the Secretary of the Navy with the approval of the President to units which, subsequent to December 6, 1941, distinguish themselves by outstanding heroism in action against an enemy, but to a lesser degree than required for the Presidential Unit Citation. The Commendation may also be awarded for extremely meritorious service not involving combat, but in support of military operations, which is outstanding when compared to other units performing similar service. The ribbon is dark green with narrow border stripes of red, gold and blue and is worn after the Joint Meritorious Unit Award and before the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. Additional awards are denoted by three-sixteenth inch bronze stars.
