The Navy Presidential Unit Citation is awarded in the name of the President for service in a unit with outstanding performance in action. The Navy Presidential Unit Citation was established on February 6, 1942 and amended on June 28, 1943. The citation is conferred on units for displaying extraordinary heroism subsequent to October 16, 1941, the degree of heroism required is the same as that which is required for the award of the Navy Cross to an individual. Unlike the Army, only individuals actually assigned to the unit when the award was granted may wear the ribbon on their uniform. The ribbon consists of three equal horizontal stripes of navy blue (top), gold (middle) and red (bottom) and is worn after the Combat Action Ribbon and before the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Additional awards of the Navy Presidential Unit Citation are denoted by three-sixteenth inch bronze stars.
