Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal Design Changes!

New Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal Design!

The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal have been redesigned by the Institute of Heraldry. The new military medals are slightly smaller in diameter from the original medals and the reverse of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal have been restruck to leave off the word “medal”. The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal has the word “Medal” removed from the front of the medal. See comparison of the old medals to the new ones below.

Do I need to replace my Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal? Does this mean that your old “Global War on Terrorism medal” needs to be replaced? No! Your original medal is still official and from my point of view you should keep it, especially if it’s mounted for wear. If you overlay the new medals over the old medals you will see they are slightly smaller, i.e the same size as the Vietnam Service medal or the National Defense Service Medal. I would keep and wear the the more unique first strike version. There are no plans to require changing your medals to the new version.

Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal’s Biggest Change

The major change is the removal of the word “medal” on the reverse of the Global War on

Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the front of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. I imagine the new medals will be issued when the current stock of the first design is exhausted.

Tomorrow we’ll discuss the Criteria of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service military medals.
