The Air Force Cross Ribbon was authorized on November 1, 1965, for extraordinary heroism while engaged in military action against an enemy of the United States or serving in combat with allied forces. Previous to the effective date of July 6, 1960, deserving Air Force personnel received the Army Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). It is awarded for heroic actions not justifying the Medal of Honor and is presented in the name of the President. This decoration ribbon is the second-highest ribbon that can be granted to the United States Air Force. This ribbon is to be worn on bronze, silver, and oak leaf clusters devices when for uniform display.
