Coast Guard Department of Transportation Outstanding Unit Award
Service: Coast Guard
Criteria: Awarded to U.S. Coast Guard units for valorous or extremely meritorious service on behalf of the Transportation Dept.
Devices: Gold, Silver Star
The Department of Transportation Outstanding Unit Award was authorized by the Secretary of Transportation effective Nov. 3, 1994 as an award to Coast Guard units for valorous or extremely meritorious service on behalf of the Transportation Dept. It has been awarded only twice, the first being to all Coast Guard active duty personnel, civilian employees, Reservists, Auxiliarists, cadets, U.S. Public Health Service personnel and Dept. of Defense personnel serving with the Coast Guard for any length of honorable service between Oct. 1, 1993 and Sept. 30, 1994. It was again awarded to Coast Guard personnel who served with the Guarding Liberty Task Force (New York City) between Sept. 11, 2001 and Oct. 22, 2001. The second award is denoted by a gold star. However, since the entire Coast Guard organization was transferred to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after the 9-11 attacks, this award will no longer be presented to Coast Guard personnel.
