US Coast Guard Unit Commendation
Service: Coast Guard
Criteria: Awarded to U.S. Coast Guard units for valorous or extremely meritorious service on behalf of the Transportation Dept.
Devices: Silver Letter “O”, Gold, Silver Star
The Coast Guard Unit Commendation was authorized by the Coast Guard Commandant effective January 1, 1963 for award to any unit which has distinguished itself by valorous or extremely meritorious service not involving combat but in support of Coast Guard operations, which renders the unit outstanding compared to other units performing similar service. This award may also be conferred upon a unit of another branch of the Armed Forces of the United States. To justify this award, the unit must have performed service as a unit of a character comparable to that which would merit the award of the Coast Guard Commendation Medal or higher award to an individual. The silver letter “O” (Operational Distinguishing Device) may be authorized. Additional awards are denoted by 5/16 inch dia. gold and silver stars.
