New easier to identify insignia were approved in June, 1970 for wear as
of July 1, 1972. Based on the anticipated addition of two warrant
grades, new insignia for W5 and W6 were developed but never authorized
for wear.
The chief of Staff approved Master Warrant Officer (W4) insignia April
8, 1988 designated certain CWO W4 as master warrants. Master Warrant
Officer appointment required completion of the Warrant Officer school at
Fort Rucker. The first class graduated on December 5, 1991,
establishing the grade of CW5. On March 28, 1991, Master Warrant Officer
W5 was approved for continued use.
