Army - USAF Brigadier General RankSold in pairs.
One silver-colored star, 1" in height. General originally meant to be of similar 'birth' or 'class' with the sovereign; the more recent use is to be familiar with all facets of the army, no longer a specialist in one area, and a "general officer". In summary any officer in general command of all troops. Original General ranks were: Captain General, Lieutenant General, Sergeant Major General and Brigadier General (A corporal in French is a Brigadier). This explains why a Lieutenant General out ranks a Major General. Major General was originally Sergeant Major General.
