Qualification for this rating badge was initially determined by an examination of total active service time (10, 15, 20 years), flying time (2,000 or 3,000 hours), and formation time. In the USAF, the requirement was to have at least 15 years rated service, 3000 hours as a pilot (or 2300 hours of first pilot/instructor pilot time), and 132 months of operational flying experience by the 18th year of aviation service.
