Criteria: Heroism, meritorious achievement, or service.

The Army Commendation Medal was originally called the 'Army Commendation Ribbon.' In 1949 it was re-designated as the 'Army Commendation Ribbon With Metal Pendant.' In 1960, its name was changed once again to its current designation as the 'Army Commendation Medal.'
